Sub Navigation

Two of Interislander's vessels are equipped to transport dangerous goods, with staff trained in the safe handling of these cargoes.

The transport of all dangerous goods across Cook Strait is subject to the regulations of the Maritime Safety Authority. Maritime Rule Part 24A mandates the requirements of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code.

The code sets out stowage requirements for Dangerous Goods at sea including specific passenger restrictions when conveying different types of dangerous goods. The code also sets out which stowage category a substance is assigned to.

All shippers and transport providers must be familiar with the requirements of the Maritime Rule Part 24A to convey dangerous goods across Cook Strait. A copy of the Rule can be obtained from the MSA's website.

Stowage Categories

Dangerous Goods that fall within stowage category A can be conveyed on any passenger sailing of Aratere or Kaitaki.

Dangerous Goods of any other stowage category can be conveyed on the following sailings:

  • Wellington to Picton 20:00pm Kaitaki

Key Requirements for Moving Dangerous Goods

Ensure all loads, including necessary segregations within transport units, comply with the IMDG code.

  • Fill in one of The Interislander Dangerous Goods Declaration Manifest's to suit your vehicle type - a combination vehicle (eg, BTrain or Truck and Trailer) (Word download 0.4mb)or a single vehicle (eg, Semi or Truck) (Word download 0.4mb). The manifest contains all the necessary information required by the ship to identify compatibility of cargo and to complete stow plans. Click here for a sample copy of the manifest which demonstrates how to complete the form.
  • Send the manifest to the dangerous goods fax or email address at least 4 hours prior to the scheduled departure of the vessel. The manifest is the ONLY document that needs to be faxed or emailed to us. To download an electronic form of either manifest, which can then be emailed instead of faxed click for either a combination vehicle (eg, BTrain or Truck and Trailer) (Word download 0.4mb) or a single vehicle (eg, Semi or Truck) form (Word download 0.4mb).
Hint: once open save this file as a document template (.doc) to your C drive for future use.
